| The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac | |
 |
|
There's a certain relief that the 2002 double-disc set The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac doesn't even attempt to dabble in the early blues work of the Peter Green band, and treats the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as ground zero. The two eras of the band don't sit well together, and it's best to isolate them, since those that want the hits don't need to hear the blues. Here, it's the prime of the platinum years, with almost all of the big songs in their original hit versions (the one real exception is a live version of "Big Love" from 1997, but most listeners aren't going to be too upset with the substitution). The biggest complaint is that chronological order would have been welcome, but the sequencing here is still nice, and all the big hits and radio staples are here, along with enough great album tracks ("Think About Me," "World Turning," "What Makes You Think You're the One") to whet the appetite for full albums for novices, who will surely find this to be a good introduction. It's not dynamic or sharply sequenced to be a truly classic collection, but it gets the job done, and it will certainly satisfy those who just need the hits, plus a little bit more for the illusion of depth. ~ All Music Guide

When it comes to Classic Country, few artists have more staying power than Willie Nelson, whose 76th birthday was April 30th. From a career that began in the early 60s as a songwriter of classics including “Hello Walls”, “Night Life” (one of the most recorded songs in country music history) and the infamous “Crazy”, Willie Nelson is now known as a singer-songwriter, actor, poet, outlaw, author and activist for American farmers with his yearly Farm-Aid. This year, Willie Nelson has had two major releases: “Willie and the Wheel”, a chart-topping collaboration with Ray Benson and Asleep At The Wheel; and “Naked Willie”, a collection of seventeen songs recorded when he was signed to RCA records from 1964 through 1970. Willie and his long-time harmonica player Mickey Raphael re-mixed the original multi-track tapes to produce “Naked Willie” as Willie had always envisioned the songs, void of strings, over-production and back-up singers. Currently touring in Canada and North America, Willie Nelson is booked on the road well through the year.

| The Very Best of Kiss | |
 |
|
Although several other hard rock acts have seen their hits repackaged more times than Kiss (namely the Who, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, etc.), the masked quartet certainly isn't far behind, as 2002 saw the group's latest in a long line of collections, The Very Best of Kiss. Despite recycling many of the same selections over and over on these sets (1978's Double Platinum, 1988's Smashes, Thrashes & Hits, 1997's Greatest Kiss, etc.), fans will flock to the stores to buy any piece of Kiss merchandise to complete their collections, hence the arrival of another of hits. While The Very Best of Kiss does contain a smattering of songs to make their debut on a hits collection (the live version of "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Got to Choose," "I Stole Your Love," "New York Groove," and a few non-makeup-era tracks), the majority of the track listing is comprised of songs already included on the aforementioned previous titles. Instead of finally doing it right and issuing a double-disc set that spans their career (à la the Who's 2002 anthology, The Ultimate Collection), there are too many hits and standout tracks that get skipped over by limiting it to a single disc. For newcomers to the band who want to get a brief overview of Kiss, The Very Best of Kiss is adequate, but certainly not the definitive collection. ~ All Music Guide

| The Ultimate Collection | |

The first single-disc Jackson 5 collection to take full advantage of the compact-disc medium, The Ultimate Collection is certainly the ultimate for any but the most hardcore fans. Ranging from 1969's "I Want You Back" to 1975's "I Am Love, Pts. 1-2," these 21 tracks include each of the group's hits, among them "ABC," "The Love You Save," "I'll Be There," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "Maybe Tomorrow," "Lookin' Through the Windows," "Get It Together," and "Dancing Machine." And unlike previous hits collections (barring only the multi-disc Anthology), there's plenty of space for more material: a few solo hits from Michael ("Got to Be There," "Rockin' Robin," "Just a Little Bit of You") and Jermaine ("Daddy's Home"), plus a pair of previously unreleased tracks ("It's Your Thing," a slowed-down Isleys cover, and "The Life of the Party"). Despite a few classic albums, the Jackson 5 were singles artists first and foremost, and their two-minute blasts of rhythm and energy are best-heard on a compilation. The best of that lot is this one. ~ All Music Guide

While the Yardbirds graduated three of the greatest guitarists in rock history--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page--during their 1963-68 existence, the group's best work came during Beck's '65-'66 tenure, which produced nearly all their hit singles and virtually everything found here. (Notable exception: their debut hit, "For Your Love," which Clapton was barely audible on anyway.) From the cat scratch fever of "I'm A Man" to the guitar-as-weapon solo in "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I," Beck rewrote the lead guitar textbook, and on one of the few songs recorded when he and Page were in the band together--"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"--they foreshadowed the sound of '70s rock. --Billy Altman

| Power Ballads-Love Songs |
| Soul | |

A great voice singing great songs recorded by a great producer. That is 'Soul', the sixth studio album from multiplatinum selling, Grammy-winning, critically acclaimed Seal. Each song is a stone-cold soul classic, from Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come', Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me', and Ann Pebbles' 'I Can't Stand The Rain' to Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes' 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' and Otis Redding's 'I've Been Loving You Too Long'. Produced by David Foster, 'Soul' is the perfect coming together of man, material and moment.
